Cinnamon is a much-loved staple in our kitchens, and is commonly found in our cookies, cakes, pastries, pies, breads, oatmeal, cinnamon toast, and applesauce. Amazingly, cinnamon not only tastes good, but some research suggests it may offer additional wellness benefits too. We've assembled eight of our favorite uses for cinnamon (using 10 recipes), to help you take full advantage of this tasty treat, and add more of it to your daily lives.
Teas. Cinnamon is often used in chai teas, and can be used to smooth out some of the more sour teas. Cinnamon adds a sweet, warm element, which helps to round out the flavor. Check out this recipe from the folks at LiveStrong, which also discusses some of the research on cinnamon tea.
Coffee. Cinnamon is a flavorful alternative to traditional sweeteners, and is commonly used in coffee to liven up the taste! If you use cinnamon in your coffee instead of cream or sugar, you could save calories per cup while still getting a flavor boost.
Healthy Treats. Cinnamon has always been associated with sweet, rich baked goods…especially around the holiday season. Here are our favorite recipes that showcase this versatile spice: Banana Bran Muffins, Multi-Grain Waffles, and just for good measure (although not quite as light) Clone a Cinnabon Cinnamon Bun!
Nut Butters. Cinnamon-flavored nut butters are simply delightful, and a tasty, protein-rich alternative to regular butter. One of the more common is Cinnamon Almond Butter.
Oatmeal. Most people know how cinnamon can take bland oatmeal and liven it up with just the right amount of sweetness! Some research has also looked at cinnamon's effects on cognitive function — worth a read if you're curious, but a great reason on its own to add it to your morning bowl.
Spice Blends. If spicy, ethnic foods are your thing, cinnamon is a must-have! Cinnamon plays an important role in Chicken Biriyani and Cinnamon Braised Short Ribs.
Arts and Crafts. A brilliant alternative to glitter that you'll be finding around the house for months to come. Added bonus: your house will smell delicious after your kids finish their crafts!
Mouth Hygiene. Cinnamon's natural compounds are the subject of ongoing research — some people use it in this homemade tooth powder or a homemade cinnamon mouthwash.
From its warm flavor to its long history in traditional cooking around the world, cinnamon is a spice worth having a home for in your daily life. With the added benefit of being delicious, we're sure you'll be asking for more. Enjoy!
